Boss Notes
Version: Version 0.9.5
by: Jug [More]
Allows you to add simple notes to bosses (or in fact any mob or player), useful for noting all those boss tactics you forget, or noting things about players. Notes are automatically displayed when the player or mob is targeted.

Designed to be very minimalist, and not get in the way. Fully supports mouse click-through and a transparent window.

Usage
Select the target you wish to add a note to, click the "edit" icon and enter your note, click the "save" button when done editing. Now whenever you target the same mob in the future your note will be displayed.

Window position can be locked by clicking the "lock" icon in the top left. This also makes the window full "click-through", except the "edit" icon which always works.

You can drag the window around by dragging anywhere on it. You can resize the window by dragging the bottom right corner. Positions (and other settings) are saved.

Slash Commands
/cbn - to toggle window visible/hidden
/cbn help -- to display addon help
/cbn clear -- clear all text in the window
/cbn font <size> -- set text font size, e.g. /cbn font 18
/cbn titlefont <size> -- set title font size
/cbn trans <1-10> -- set window transparency, e.g. /cbn trans 10

Adding notes without target

Is there a way to add notes without targeting the boss? I like to do a little research before entering a raid, and it's helpful to me to be able to leave myself notes about things I need to remember before I actually get there.

Can this be used as just a Notepad? I am looking for a simple Addon just for taking notes like /locs, names, places, quest info, etc. I am not needing to target anything and then have a note. Thanks

Oops

Thanks for the quick reply. Nothing you need to check into. I just got overeager in playing with it. I pulled everything out and started again. It worked the way you meant it to.

I agree, being able to load someone else's notes would rock. I'll keep an eye on the thread. Again, thanks for your work.

Hey, you probably know this already, but...copy/paste functionality works with it, so, if you plan ahead for a particular mob, say Plutonus in RoS and type what you want the note to say in notepad or similar, you can paste as soon as you can target him. So, if I can't put the note in ahead of time, I can at least have it all typed!

I have a lot of typing to do, lol!

Notes should be shared across all your characters, if they're not, it means sometimes not working so I'll investigate this.

Yeah, I understand your pain. I've had exactly the same feeling. "Damn, gotta type these notes quick before tank pulls!"

Notes are attached to mobs in a pretty weird way currently as a workaround for limitations of this early version of the Addon API. There are some changes coming up in the Rift Addon API (1.6 or earlier) that will make a solution for this easier. I imagine a "Select Location->Select Boss" then "add note" type of interface. We'll see.

Currently the Rift Addon API does not allow exporting or importing from any files other than an addons own config file, and that file is in a pretty exotic format. So we can't just import a simple text file with info in it. Yet.

I'd really love to be able to share notes with other people in game, so I wouldn't even have to type notes myself I could just steal someone elses , but again, the Addon API does not allow for this yet.

Possibilities?

This looks like it could be really really helpful for those of us with faulty memory issues. With that in mind, there's a couple of things I'd love to see if they are possible.

1) Ability to import/export notes to another character. I was able to do this by copying the \\rift game\interface\saved\email\server\character name\saved variables to another folder with the new character's name but an import/export would sure make it easier.
2) Far more important to me would be an ability to enter/update these offline if that is possible. I'd love to be able to plan/label mobs for an encounter ahead of time, so I'm not trying to update notes when my raid is ready to pull. Maybe some kind of form you fill in in notepad and run an import program?

Obviously I don't program or I'd dig into this myself, but please, let me know if these are within reach. You'll make me a happy camper

Thanks for your efforts so far!

Installing version 0.9.5 or later fixes the problem with the window being resized so small that it's invisible.

hehe, I hadn't noticed you could shrink the window to invisibility. I'll fix that so you can't in the future.

As a fix for this currently, you can just delete the settings file that holds the window size. Open the Rift Addons folder, go "up" (or back) one folder and you'll see two folders "Saved" and "Addons", delete the file:

Saved\<youremail>\<yourshard>\<yourcharactername>\SavedVariables\BossNotes.lua

Or just wait a few hours and I'll upload a new version
